Fan Art Friday! Peekaboo! Where’s Artoo?

Can you tell I have a baby in my life? Honestly. I just wrote peekaboo in the title of a blog post. Shoot me now.

I’m glad Mei-Mei picked an easy picture this month to color.

I realized while coloring this that I always, in my head, thought of Artoo as a “blue” droid. But he doesn’t have that much blue! I think it’s because it’s his only defining color that I think he’s blue. Just like I think BB-8 is orange, but he’s not really. He has very little orange as well. The dominant color of most astro droids is white (if that can be considered a color).

I was pleased with the way this picture came out for most part. I stayed true to Artoo but did the background with colors I don’t use very often so I felt satisfied that unused pencils got a chance to shine.

I picked the quote on top because it stuck with me the entire time that I was coloring this in. Sometimes I like throwing in a quote here and there and this one is one of the funnier ones Threepio says to Artoo.

When you check out Mei-Mei’s picture, she mentions that a lot of fans were disappointed that Artoo didn’t get as much screen time as some had hoped. I was fine with it, but I think it will be interesting to see how his story progresses along with Luke’s. They’ve always been tied together, along with Artoo being with Anakin. Artoo is a member of the Skywalker family – something I had never really considered until this drawing.

We will be taking a break next month as Mei-Mei just had her little baby boy and will reconvene on the first Friday of February 2018. The picture will be the one of Darth Vader and Anakin in the podracer towards the end of the book.

Haiku Me Friday! The soulful eyes

Here we go again
Will you love me or hate me?
Big eyes draw you in

Hi all! It’s me! I swear I’m around but we’ve been packing up and moving our house which is…no small feat. Most of my energy has been centered on that which has left whatever remaining energy I have directed to my business and family. This blog has taken the back seat, but you know – once everything settles down, I’ll be writing again.

I did, of course, watch the new TLJ behind-the-scenes trailer and have been keeping up with any D23 news that came out and am now waiting to see if anything comes out at SDCC (word is we won’t get much, but the costume info was a small bit).

I enjoy behind-the-scenes trailers more than real trailers. I remember when the TFA bts trailer came out at SDCC and I went through frame by frame to glean any information that I could. I didn’t do this with TLJ, but I did watch it a few times through and…

Those porgs.

First of all, they are so adorable and cute! I’m not going to deny it. Kinda furry, looks like they waddle and they have big, soulful eyes. I can see why the internet is calling the Furby’s.

But…Star Wars has a funny history with cute elements as I discussed only a few months ago when I rehashed the Ewok hate again. Fans get so worked up and there are such polarizing views on them.

I love the Ewoks. I think they send a good message: small beings you think may be beneath your notice have more strength and courage than you think.

I am neutral but sometimes dislike Jar Jar Binks. I can’t figure out Jar Jar. The Ewoks were definitely cute. I think Jar Jar was an attempt to be cute but it did not come off as intended.

The information we know about Porgs is that they live on Ahch-To, they build nests, and they can fly. Oh, and their babies are called Porglets (so fascinating (sarcasm)).

This is where it gets tricky. My hope is that the Porgs stay almost as a background creature where you think – aw they’re kinda cute but they don’t have too much of a role in saving the universe. I’m not sure why I feel like this, since I love the Ewoks. I believe some of the reason is that I consider BB-8 enough of a cute factor in this new Sequel Trilogy that if we push the cuteness TOO far, it’ll be an annoyance more than anything. (Imagine if a Porg ends up traveling with Rey when she leaves Ahch-To? It’ll be like every single Disney princess movie out there with the main female character and her trusty animal friend sidekick.)

Honestly, I don’t believe they’ll play a big role. Disney has a pattern with TFA and RO where they show these cool creatures and aliens in previews and then they’re on screen for about a millisecond – and that’s what I think they’re doing with the Porgs.

Yet, at the end of this, I totally am welcoming of these Porgs. But mostly because I want a stuffed animal one for ARM’s room. 🙂

Anyone got any other thoughts about the TLJ behind-the-scenes trailer? I’m looking forward to the casino scene!

The Last Jedi Teaser Trailer and Speculations

We FINALLY got our first trailer for Episode VIII today and I have to say, I’m a little disappointed.  With only around 8 months left to go until the movie is released, I expected a little bit more.  It didn’t really give me much to chew on.  Most of us knew that Rey would train with Luke for a good portion of the movie so seeing those scenes didn’t rivet me in any way.

Don’t get me wrong – my favorite types of movies have some kind of intense training period in them when the trainee becomes a hero.  I’m actually MOST excited about the training of Rey in TLJ.  I just think the trailer was little light on content for being pretty close to the release of the movie and was hoping for a lot more.

Poe and Finn were barely in the trailer and seemed like an afterthought (Finn especially), so I do hope that they get more screen time than the trailer suggests.  I loved seeing BB-8 again, my favorite droid, and was super sad to see Poe’s x-wing blow up!  I hope he makes it out okay.

Where was Kylo Ren?  We only got a very brief shot.  (Also, how did he get his mask back? Is this going to be one of those weird unexplained things like how Maz got Luke’s lightsaber?)

I liked seeing the Jedi Order symbol…really excited to see where that goes.

The most important and puzzling line is Luke’s declaration that “I only know one truth. It’s time for the Jedi to end.”  NO LUKE NO WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?  I think that scene is from him being on the mountain top too long.  He’s turned into a curmudgeon and the line is probably in the beginning of the movie.  Right after it, Rey will say, “Are you nuts? I didn’t come all this way to hear you say that,” and he’ll go, “Oh yeah, you’re right, what was I thinking? Let’s begin this training.”  Hahahaha, but seriously, I have a strong feeling the line is in the beginning of the movie and it’s following a similar format to Yoda/Luke in ESB – where Yoda did not want to train Luke, but in the end gives in.

The Midi-Chlorian Center did a nice round up of the new poster and photos from the movie, so head to their page to check it out.  I can’t wait to see who Rose is and what her story will bring us.  I hope she’s a good addition.

Here’s the trailer for those of you who don’t know how to search on YouTube. 😉

Thoughts guys?  I feel like there really isn’t much to discuss, unfortunately.

Haiku Me Friday! BB-8 Stole My Heart

Shout out to my favorite droid!

I felt a little guilty the day I realized BB-8 was my favorite droid, which in all honesty could’ve been when I saw the first TFA preview ever, way back on Thanksgiving of two years ago.   The way he was rolling along Jakku’s surface, a blur of orange on white, made me think, “A soccer ball droid!  So cute!”

But everyone loves Artoo!  Artoo is the fan favorite and I get it, but for some reason I never connected with him.  I think one of the main reasons is that Artoo was familiar to me by cultural context – I knew who he was before knowing who he was.  Just like I knew the quotes “I am your father”, Darth Vader, the Force and a few other Star Wars references before seeing the movies or becoming a big fan.  So though Artoo was cute, he was, well, Artoo Detoo.  Always there.

But BB-8 was a surprise for me.  A round droid?  How genius!  And then when I actually heard him for the first time in TFA, my heart stopped.  BB-8: we were meant to be!  I want my own BB-8 so badly.  I love how he portrays his emotions, especially when he thought Poe had died.  When he sees Poe is alive and goes to greet him – aggggghhhh I’m jealous!  I want BB-8 to greet me like that.  Oh and don’t even get into his flame thumbs up.  Melting heart…

I know you are all wondering now if I have the Sphero BB-8…I do not.  I’m not sure what I would do with it.  Plus, our dog Yogi would probably have a field day with it and BB-8 would quickly become BB-ate.

My husband did get me a BB-8 carry on last year for Christmas even before I saw TFA because I liked the droid so much.  I love my carry on!  He comes with me on every vacation and I love posting photos on Instagram saying “Come on BB-8!” just like Rey.  It’s the small pleasures in life, okay guys??  ARM also had an adorable BB-8 dress (and Darth Amethystos christened her Baby-8) but she’s too big for it now, alas.

Okay.  Done effusing about BB-8.  But tell me – who’s your favorite droid?  Let’s have a droid lovefest.

Haiku Me Friday! 1987

My birthday was yesterday.  I have always loved my birthday but I feel like as I get older, they kind of fade into the background.  I miss my mom making a big deal out of everything I do when I was younger, I miss my locker being decorated by my friends when I was in middle school, and I miss skipping all my classes in college and watching a bunch of TV in bed.

I bet someday I’m going to miss being childless and having time to do little things like my Star Wars blog, haha.  So maybe I should just enjoy this.

I’m due in a month and half, by the way…kind of cray cray, right?  I went to an ultrasound last week and they said my little girl is going to be small and has long legs – just like me!  I was a little baby with really long legs too.

She does have a few Star Wars things, a cute BB-8 dress and and Ewok onesie along with a crocheted Yoda hat and leg warmers.  My boppy pillow also has a Star Wars cover…the room is not Star Wars themed though.  I’m trying my best to let her decide what she will like and dislike and not force Star Wars on her but there’s only so much I can do since my whole life is Star Wars.  She is going to be brainwashed to some extent. 😉

Yes – I’m one year away from the big 3-0!  That’s me yesterday getting my cake (I’ve had a major craving for anything with fruit lately so I got a fruit tart instead of cake).

I decided to take a look back and see what memorable events happened in 1987 with Star Wars.  Good thing Wookieepedia has a whole page devoted to it.

Most notable:

It’s strange to think that next year is the 40th anniversary of A New Hope.  40 years since that movie came out and changed so many of our lives…I’m still hoping my little girl will be born on May 25th, the same date that ANH was released in 1977.  I think that would be quite fitting.
