SWCE Rogue One Update

Here’s my Star Wars round up for today: Ezra cuts his hair in the new season of Rebels and I watched SWCE Rogue One panel live for an hour and didn’t get to see the new trailer.  Sigh.

But we did see this kind of cool behind the scenes look and you know what?  I’m really looking forward to it!  I know when the first trailer came out, I had some weird reservations that it seemed too much like an Iraq or Vietnam war movie (and I still think that) but it definitely looks cool.

The most interesting parts of the reel for me:

  • Seeing an RA-7 droid! Talk about a blast from the past.
  • Director Krennic’s cape.
  • Yavin 4!!
  • Jyn in normal clothing. Not even a low cut shirt.  Thanks for not making her a Charlie’s Angel.
  • Infiltrating the Empire. We all saw Jyn in that TIE uniform in the first trailer but if you slow down the clip, you can see Cassian in an Imperial uniform throwing a stormtrooper against a wall.

There were some interesting facts from the panel.  It wasn’t all a complete waste.  For instance:

  1. James Earl Jones is confirmed to come back as the voice of Vader (excuse me if everyone already knows this – I have been SO out of it due to having a baby.)
  2. K-2SO is the name of the new droid in this movie. From what Alan said during the panel, this droid may be the comic relief.  Once an Imperial droid, he’s now been reprogrammed by Cassian so he’s “not quite all there”.
  3. Along with K-2SO, I’m wondering if Baze is also some of the comic relief. It seems like since Chirrut is the more serious warrior-monk-but-not-quite-Jedi, Baze is the foil.  He described himself as a non-believer in the Force and a “doer” whereas Chirrut is the “thinker”.  Was there some reference somewhere that they might be a little like the two guys in The Hidden Fortress whom Lucas based Artoo and Threepio off of?  I feel like I read that somewhere…Is Chirrut part of the Church of the Force like Lor San Tekka?
  4. Bodhi was a pilot who worked for the Empire. The city he is from is occupied by the Empire and makes him question his job.  We all know he joins the Rebellion but I’m not sure what the tipping point is or if we’ll find out.
  5. Jyn’s father, Galen Erso, invented something “so beautiful, so fantastic, it might change the universe.” We know from previous articles that whatever he created or knows, it’s sought by the Empire and the Rebellion.  I’m sure that will create an interesting relationship between Jyn and her father and we all know how much Star Wars loves relationships between children and fathers.
  6. Jedha and Scarrif are the new locations/planets. Jedha is the planet that looks like Iraq and people make Force-based pilgrimages.  Scarrif is where you want to go on holiday.  LFL really likes introducing planets that start with J recently.
  7. Felicity Jones said the most interesting part of her character is that while Luke and Rey don’t know their background and are searching for it – Jyn knows her story and family, but is trying to find a cause.
  8. Not sure we learned much more about Saw Gerrera. I should probably watch those TCW episodes again.  I remember that I found him annoying and slightly crazy.

***SPOILER ALERT***

I think the guy who plays Baze also mistakenly revealed that Chirrut dies.  I’m pretty sure I understood that correctly and the way Gwendoline got awkward and tried to change the subject was funny.

***END SPOILER***

There’s a Force Awakens special tonight on abc at 8pm where most people think the second trailer will also be aired.  I’ve DVR’d it anyway so hoping that it’s true and I get to see the new trailer.

Strangely, this feels very much like Star Wars Rebels to me – minus Kanan and Ezra.  I wonder if that was on purpose?  Disney is trying so hard to make everything feel cohesive within the books, novels, TV shows, and the movies.

I am happy that my interest has been re-“awakened” in Rogue One.  There’s so much even from that one clip to dissect.  I’m not sure we’ll ever know what the reshoots were about but from this clip, I still think the movie feels very “war-like”.

Thoughts? Let’s hope for a new trailer tonight!

Haiku Me Friday! Under the Shadow…

Under the shadow A new dark lord rises up Yet struggles so much

Under the shadow
A new dark lord rises up
Yet struggles so much

This has to be one of my favorite haikus I’ve written in a while.

When I wrote this haiku, I thought that Kylo would be rising up as a dark Force user under the shadow of Darth Vader.  But after watching the bonus disc material that came with TFA, I wonder if perhaps the shadow he felt were his parents: these two prominent figures in the fight against the Empire.  Adam Driver mentioned that his parents were not often there for Kylo Ren as they struggled with the politics of putting a new government together.  So under this shadow, did Kylo Ren turn to the dark side because Snoke offered him attention?  And his struggle with the light side come from the fact that now he finally has his parents attention so he wants to turn back to the light side?

But added to that is the shadow of his grandfather.  He wants so badly to live up to these standards he has set for himself and carry on the legacy of Darth Vader.  Yet as he goes through the process, he constantly battles with the pull to the light side of the Force.  Is this because the light side is stronger (Yoda said it is in ESB) or because of his personality?

It seems like Kylo Ren’s biggest struggle was living under the shadow of his family.  His parents helped rid the galaxy of the Empire.  His grandfather was the most powerful Force user in the galaxy’s history.  His Uncle is the sole remaining Jedi.

And not only does Kylo struggle with the light side, but he also struggles with the respect he feels he deserves as a Sith (or soon-to-be-Sith…I’m still unclear if the Knights of Ren are actually Sith).  Clearly General Hux tolerates him but I’m not sure he respects him as a member of the First Order.  Lor San Tekka derided him as soon as he showed up on Jakku.  Supreme Leader Snoke seems to go back and forth on if he trusts Kylo Ren and I bet he knows he’s taking a gamble with him.  Heck, I would too…the grandson of Darth Vader to possibly use as your tool, even if he ends up dying or turning to the light side would be worth it for a bit.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the shadow of Kylo’s family (Vader, parents) drove him to the dark side where he rose up high due to his natural inclinations with the Force.  But he struggles with the light side and gaining respect from others.

Ahhhh I love it when my haikus force me to think.

Have I convinced any of the Kylo-haters to give him a second chance or rethink about him a bit?

Is Redemption and Life Possible?

Hi guys!  Long time no visit here…been enjoying the sunny weather down in Florida.  But alas, I’m back up in Massachusetts and it’s cold.  My favorite (sarcasm).

There have been a lot of mixed reactions on Kylo Ren between Star Wars fans.  When I first saw The Force Awakens, I wasn’t sure I liked him much.  He was whiney, a tad bratty, at times had complete mastery over the Force, and then got whooped easily by Rey by the end of the movie.  I also didn’t think he was as imposing or as threatening as I would have liked a new dark character to be.

I saw the movie two more times since then and I have actually grown to enjoy his character.  He is conflicted and I think that comes out in the temper Ren and Vader helmettantrum side that he has.  Disney gave us something new and different by presenting a character that openly admits his struggles with the dark and light side of the Force.  The light side calls to him and he wants to conquer his pull toward it.  We haven’t seen that before in a character.  We certainly saw Anakin struggle in AOTC and then more openly in ROTS, but never displaying an open reference to his struggle.  Okay, Kylo Ren’s wasn’t necessarily “open” since he was talking to Darth Vader’s helmet in private, but I like that we saw that personal part of his life.  With Anakin, his turn to the dark side felt like a means to an end.  With Kylo, we still are unsure what drove him to the dark side or if there was a final tipping point like Anakin had.  If Mace Windu hadn’t said he was going to kill Palpatine (“he is too dangerous to be left alive!”), Anakin may not have turned to the dark side.  Weak argument, but could be true.

Since Kylo’s turn is still open ended, maybe there was no tipping point or means to an end.  Perhaps like Leia implied, Snoke seduced him and maybe Snoke’s methods of seduction are not as strong as the manipulation Palpatine did with Anakin.

Because of Kylo Ren’s grey area, are we now supposed to know that by killing his father he is fully entrapped in the dark side?  Are we meant to think that there is no more struggle?

If we believe that Kylo has wholly turned to the dark side, but also know how much he struggled in TFA with the complete conversion, then is there a chance he can be redeemed?  What would be most interesting to me is if he is redeemed, they choose to have his character continue to live.

Is that even possible?  From what we’ve seen, when someone turns back to the light side, usually they die right afterwards which is convenient because can you imagine if Luke brought Vader back to the Rebellion and tried to convince everyone he was good again?  But it sounds like Kylo could have grown up with the Resistance and obviously with notable parents.  Even Lor San Tekka acknowledged Kylo by his real name Ben, not a knight of Ren possibly implying he was around when he was growing up.  So would it be easier for other light side characters to accept a converted Kylo Ren?  As an audience, it would also be less complicated to understand his transition back the light side because the foundation for that has already been set in TFA.kylo ren

It could be an alternate outcome to ROTJ.  Luke was a notable Jedi who brought his father back to the light side.  Rey could be the notable Jedi who brings her (brother? Cousin?) back to the light side, but this time also brings him back home to his family.

I fully understand the chances of this happening are slim as it’s so much more dramatic and plays out better cinematically to have Kylo either stay completely in the dark side or convert to the light side, sacrificing himself for the noble cause.

But from a storytelling perspective, I like thinking about the possibilities if they decided to have his character live and join Rey to bring about the destruction of Snoke, Hux, and the First Order.  (Though, on another note, if wannabe Empires keep forming and getting destroyed, Star Wars would get stale really fast so hopefully they find an alternate storyline.)  By uniting with Rey, he could be accepted back if everyone saw his redeeming qualities.

Either way, if Kylo Ren dies unredeemed, or redeems himself and lives, or redeems himself and dies…I definitely enjoy his character and am hoping that we continue to see evolution from him.

Other notes:

TFA will be released digitally on April 1st and DVD on April 5th.

I found this when I was wandering the Internet thinking about Kylo Ren. It’s pretty good for a laugh.
