Starting this weekend – join me :)

Starting this weekend we have exactly 7 weekends left until The Last Jedi arrives in our lives.

I decided to use this time to watch one Star Wars episode each weekend. If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you’ll know that I’ve had a bit of a fascination with the machete theory. I have always wanted to try watching the movies in this order to see what kind of response it generated from me, but I never had the time or motivation. However, since I’ve been super organized this year, I will use these weekends to watch the Star Wars movies in my own modified version of the machete order: IV, V, (I), II, III, VI, (VII). Parentheses indicate that these episodes were not in the original machete theory order. The inventor of this order believed that:

  • The Phantom Menace was lousy and there was nothing in it that greatly contributed to the saga as a whole, and
  • The Force Awakens was not part of the original machete order as it had not been released.

I’m sorry, but I love TPM so there’s no way I can cut that out of the viewing order. Seeing Anakin when he was so innocent and young lends a lot to the Saga. You see where his main fear of losing people comes from: Shmi, his mother. It frustrates me when people easily wave aside TPM when I think it’s one of the strongest movies of the Prequels. But, alas, a discussion to rehash at another time.

I’d love for any of you to join me in this! You don’t have to watch the movies in the machete order, but I do think it will be a good way for all us fans to get ready for TLJ and gain new insight into the saga. I think one movie a week is pretty doable. I hope to reflect and write out some thoughts here if anything inspires a full post.

I kind of wanted to create a hashtag for this experiment as well, but felt like that was a little too much. But I’m open to suggestions if you have any!

7 weekends left until TLJ! MTFBWY.

  1. I have one month left until my due date, and I have a sinking feeling that I may not make it to see TLJ on opening day haha. Oh well, I’m sure I’ll be able to see it in theaters at some point over Christmas.

But this sounds like great fun! I’ll join in as much as possible 🙂

  2. Good idea. Don’t know if I will be able to join, it’s all up to my kids who are being 3 year old douche nuggets. Having twins maybe when they are old enough I should have one watch in release order and the other in #NewMachete style and see what they think.

    How about #StarWarsReWatch

    1. I like that! Maybe that’ll be the hashtag. If I use it…lol. I always think I’m going to hashtag stuff but never remember.

I can understand re: twins! I’m definitely going to be doing this once ARM is in bed. But I’m excited to finally try the machete order! I’ve been wanting to do it for years but the thought of having to watch all of them in a row was daunting. I just don’t have the time anymore! But this way, I get to watch all 7 and only do 1 a weekend instead.

  3. I decided, for ‘The Last Jedi’, to go all in and really try the Disney Canon side by side with Lucas’s work. So, starting on December 6th, I’m doing one a night, going chronologically (according to the narrative). So it’s TPM, AOTC, ROTS, RO, ANH, ESB, ROTJ, and TFA. I fear I may be biting off more than I can chew schedule-wise but I’ve never done this before so I’m going for it!

    1. Oh man. Isn’t your butt going to hate you? I used to do marathons of the original trilogy when I was younger and even that was really tough! And you’re even throwing in rogue one! Omg that… I just don’t see how that’s going to work. That’s like what… Almost 20 hours of movie time?

      1. Ooooh, okay, sorry. My comment wasn’t clear :). I’m doing one a night. So I’m starting on December 6th and watching one film each night leading up to ‘The Last Jedi.’ Not only would my butt hate me if I did that, I’d hate life and there’s no way I could enjoy (or probably even stay awake for) ‘The Last Jedi’ at that point. Although, now that you mention it, it would be a pretty hardcore approach…

But that’s for a younger, more insane person than myself :).
