Scene it on Friday – TPM Scene #26

Sith_Lords_Trade_Federation tpm

I have clearly not seen this movie in a while, because I cannot remember if some of these lines are spoken or not.

I’m almost 100% positive that the line, “Destroy all high-ranking officials, Viceroy… slowly…quietly,” was not in the movie, and I’m debating if the first line Nute mutters is also in there.  I don’t remember it, but I’m frustrated that I can’t remember.

Also the last line…was that in the movie?  “What will happen when the Jedi become aware of these Sith Lords?”

Time to rewatch TPM sometime soon, methinks.

However, if the line about destroying high-ranking officials is not in the movie, which I don’t think it is, it puts another twist on this scene.  It’s obvious as to why Sidious would want to get rid of the higher-ranking officials.  But it’s interesting that he says “quietly”, because it shows that he’s got his hand dipped in many places.

If Gunray just started destroying officials left and right, the Senate would clearly (or hopefully) take action against the blockade that the Trade Federation had set up.  It wouldn’t have been devastating for Palpatine, because as we see, he can recover quite well from setbacks.  He’s the master manipulator.

But on another note, this is the first time we see a glimpse of Darth Maul in the movie!  Do you guys remember how you felt?  If you ventured outside the house, you would have seen photos of him by that point because marketing for this movie was intense, but still…ooooo.  Shivers/goosebumps and just thinking, “He looks scary.”  And the greatest thing is that he doesn’t even say a word: just stands there briefly for about five seconds, and then disappears once more.  All the more fearful because of his silence.  The only feeling he leaves is one of dread and foreboding.

Awesome.

INTERIOR: FEDERATION BATTLESHIP – CONFERENCE ROOM

NUTE and RUNE sit around a conference table with a hologram of DARTH SIDIOUS.

NUTE: We control all the cities in the North and are searching for any other settlements…

DARTH SIDIOUS: Destroy all high-ranking officials, Viceroy… slowly…quietly. And Queen Amidala, has she signed the treaty?

NUTE: She has disappeared, My Lord. One Naboo cruiser got pat the blockade.

DARTH SIDIOUS: Viceroy, find her! I want that treaty signed.

NUTE: My Lord, it’s impossible to locate the ship. It’s out of our range.

DARTH SIDIOUS: …not for a Sith…

A second SITH LORD appears behind DARTH SIDIOUS.

DARTH SIDIOUS: (Cont’d) …Viceroy, this is my apprentice. Lord Maul.  He will find your lost ship.

NUTE: Yes, My Lord. The hologram fades off.

NUTE: (Cont’d) This is getting out of hand…now there are two of them.

RUNE: We should not have made this bargain. What will happen when the Jedi become aware of these Sith Lords?

  1. I still wish Darth Maul had been kept alive, and had become a greater villain through the whole trilogy. It would have been awesome to have him as key to Anakin’s downfall. Darth Maul is a missed opportunity.

    • Oh, I totally 100% completely agree. I think they realized that and that’s why they brought him back in TCW. Or, they were just getting desperate.

Count Dooku was so lame after Darth Maul. You went from frightening, to…sophisticated? It was just a weird transition from one nemesis that I could take very, very seriously, to one that I could see strolling through the ground’s of Downton Abbey, not wanting to get his hands dirty. Doesn’t inspire fear. No, not so much.

  2. Yeah, I’m pretty sure the first and last lines are not in the actual movie, but I also haven’t seen TPM in awhile.
Darth Maul is a prime example of how the prequels traded story and character for cool visuals. I agree, he is definitely a missed opportunity.
